Early life and education

Verdugo was raised in Laguna Niguel, California.[1]

He attended Aliso Viejo High School before enrolling at San Diego State University, where he began developing technology-related ventures alongside his studies.[2]

From a young age, Verdugo had interests in boating, flying, deep-sea fishing, diving, and working with tools. He has held a private pilot’s license for more than 15 years.[1]

Career

iGolf

Verdugo founded iGolf in the early 2000s, initially as a golf GPS device company. He is credited with creating one of the first consumer golf GPS solutions, starting with a system developed for Palm handheld devices and later expanding to standalone handhelds, GPS-enabled watches, and integrated golf speakers.[1][3]

In 2008, Bushnell Outdoors acquired iGolf’s hardware division, after which the company transitioned into an intellectual property and licensing business.

Today, iGolf licenses its technology portfolio to more than 80 companies worldwide, with its GPS golf course mapping database and related innovations integrated into millions of golf products.

The company has also designed hardware and software for GPS devices, laser rangefinders, and launch monitors, helping shorten product development cycles for industry partners.[1]

SyncWise

In 2017, Verdugo founded SyncWise, a technology company focused on wireless control systems for low-speed vehicles (LSVs) in the electric vehicle sector.

SyncWise’s platform integrates cameras, radar, lidar, inertial measurement units, and electric motor control units via a secure 5G network, with applications in autonomous transportation within cities, campuses, and planned communities.[1]

SyncWise also launched the first 4G telemetry system for Yamaha’s personal transport and golf fleet vehicles, with long-term plans to introduce fully autonomous LSVs.[1]

Other ventures

In 2011, Verdugo co-founded Quartet Vineyards. The winery, located in Napa Valley’s Diamond Mountain District, produces Cabernet Sauvignon. The inaugural vintage was released in 2012 and is noted for its limited availability.[1]

Verdugo is also a partner in Location Capital, a family office investment fund with interests in technology, location-based data services, and related industries.[4]

Philosophy and industry influence

Verdugo has expressed a desire to bridge generational divides in golf and other sports, advocating for technologies and approaches that appeal both to traditional participants and to younger, less formal audiences.[1]

He emphasizes the importance of preserving core traditions and values in sport while adapting to modern expectations for entertainment, accessibility, and engagement.

Beyond sports, Verdugo supports the integration of emerging technologies into industries ranging from transportation to consumer electronics, believing that innovation should focus on improving user experience, efficiency, and connectivity.

His work in both sports technology and autonomous vehicle systems reflects a broader commitment to advancing technology in ways that serve diverse communities and industries.[3]

Personal life

Verdugo has cited his late grandfather, Robert Eugene Hoffmann, as a major influence. Hoffmann was a former chief engineer and senior executive at the Bell Company, a concert pianist, and a private pilot; his example inspired Verdugo’s own interest in aviation.[5]

In addition to his business ventures, Verdugo has been active in philanthropy, serving as event co-chair for both the 7th Annual (2015) and 8th Annual (2016) American Cancer Society Discovery Celebration Galas in San Diego, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.[6][7]

He continues to pursue outdoor activities including boating, flying, fishing, and diving.[1]
