Brigadier Elsie Willis
Service in Sarawak
After World War II, the Sarawak Government invited The Salvation Army to start a Girl's Home to protect vulnerable young girls and women from exploitation. In October 1950, Brigadier Bertha Grey accompanied Captain Elsie Willis to Kuching. After three weeks, Brigadier Grey returned to Singapore. Captain Willis then pioneered the work. A Girls Home was then started in January 1951 at Haji Taha Road, where the present Chung Hua Middle School No.4 is located. In 1952, Padungan Corps was started at a shophouse in Padungan. In 1958, Padungan Corps was renamed Kuching Corps and moved to its current location at Sekama Road. In October the same year, The Salvation Army took over the running of a Boys Home at Ban Hock Road. A year later, the Girls Home at Haji Taha moved to Jalan Uplands.
