Bright Comprehensive Secondary School (commonly abbreviated as BRICOSS) is a mixed day and boarding secondary school located in Maddu, Gomba District, in the Central Region of Uganda. It is registered with the Ministry of Education and Sports under registration number U3684. Established in 2013, the school offers education from Senior 1 (S1) to Senior 6 (S6), preparing students for the Uganda Certificate of Education (O-Level) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (A-Level) examinations. The school also offers vocational training in areas such as tailoring, information technology, poultry management, and hairdressing.[1]

History

Bright Comprehensive Secondary School was founded in 2013 by Nsamba Peter to expand access to secondary education in Maddu and surrounding areas. Initially, the school had fewer than 100 students and a small teaching staff. Early challenges included limited classroom space, insufficient teaching materials, and recruiting qualified teachers. Over time, the school expanded its facilities and curriculum to accommodate a growing student population.[1]

The school has introduced vocational courses, student clubs, and boarding facilities. It emphasizes academic performance and personal development.

Location

The school is situated along Maddu–Gomba Road in the town of Maddu, Central Uganda. The district is primarily rural, and the school serves students from local and neighboring communities. The mixed day and boarding system allows access for students from distant areas.

Campus and facilities

BRICOSS has classrooms, administrative offices, laboratories, a library, vocational workshops, and sports fields. Boarding facilities include separate hostels for male and female students, each with dining and study areas.

Vocational facilities provide practical training in tailoring, IT, poultry management, and hairdressing. Recreational facilities include a football field, basketball court, and a multipurpose hall for assemblies and cultural events.

Academics

The school follows the Uganda National Curriculum Framework, offering core subjects such as mathematics, English, science, and social studies, along with elective subjects for O-Level and A-Level. Vocational courses complement academic programs.

Students take the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) at the end of S4 and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) at the end of S6. According to 2020 Gomba District UCE results, the school had a notable pass rate.[2]

Student life

Students participate in clubs and societies including drama, debate, science, and music. The school choir, Spring of Hope Choir, performs at school events.[3]

Boarding students follow structured schedules balancing study, recreation, and personal development. Annual events include sports day, cultural festivals, and academic competitions.

Governance and administration

The school is governed by a Board of Governors, chaired by Pr. Lukyamuzi Dionisius. Day-to-day operations are managed by the headteacher and administrative staff. Parent-Teacher Associations facilitate communication between families and school administration.

Community engagement

BRICOSS participates in local community initiatives including volunteer programs, literacy campaigns, and vocational workshops, promoting social responsibility.

Accreditation and recognition

The school is registered with the Ministry of Education and Sports of Uganda (registration number U3684). Students’ performance in national examinations demonstrates compliance with academic standards.[1]
