Biography[edit]

Brij Nath Mithal was born in 1890 and started practising as an Advocate in the year 1913. He was the first generation lawyer who established himself in Meerut after his predecessors migrated from Kandhla in Muzzafarnagar and came to Meerut. He was one of the greatest civil and revenue lawyers that Meerut Bar has ever produced. He died in June, 1953.

Achievements[edit]

He is credited with establishing the Law Faculty in Meerut College, Meerut of which he remained the Head of Department till the end of his life. He was associated with the management of D.N. College and R.G. Inter college. He was the secretary of Arya Samaj Kanya Pathshala for several years. He used to donate Rs.100/- per month to the Arya Samaj at that time. Justice late Jagmohanlal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court in his message to the Meerut Bar Association on the occasion of its centenary celebrations mentioned that his memories of Meerut relate back to the times of late Brij Nath Mithal who was his teacher when he was a student of law in Meerut College, Meerut. He was universally respected by the students for his sweet and suave manner and admired for his elegant style.

The souvenir of the Meerut Bar Association published in 1983 on the occasion of it centenary celebration in an article written by the then District and Sessions Judge V.P. Mathur, later Justice, Allahabad High Court, mentions that Brij Nath Mithal was an epitome of legal learning and generous gentleness. He was a giant with noble behaviour in and out of court. He was socially an active person. He was in the executive council of the Meerut College Meerut and was also its president.

The boys hostel for the law students of the Meerut College is named after him as Brij Nath Mithal (BNM) Hostel and is still functioning as such. He was a staunch Arya Samazi and was the member of Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, U.P. Lucknow for three years. He was also associated with Ramanuj Anothalya (Vaish Orphanage), a premier institute of Meerut that had the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi.

Family[edit]

His house/kothi ‘Ram Vatika’ which he got constructed in the year 1928 was famous for its magnificence and location close to the District Civil Courts and Collectorate.

His eldest son late Raghubar Dayal Mithal was also a prominent civil lawyer of Meerut. His other son Narendra Nath Mithal[1], again a practising lawyer at Meerut was elevated as a Judge of the Allahabad High Court. One of his grandsons Arun Kumar Mithal was also a famous lawyer on the civil side and his another grandson Pravin Mithal is still a practising lawyer. His another grandson Pankaj Mithal is presently a judge in Supreme Court of India. His two great grand sons Vibhav Mithal and Vinayak Mithal are also in legal profession.

His portrait decorates the walls of Nanak Chand Sabhagrah, the central hall of the Meerut Bar Association.
