The British Conservation Alliance (BCA) is a pro-market environmental and conservation non-partisan, non-profit organisation, based in the United Kingdom, founded by Christopher Barnard in 2019, who is also Policy Director at the American Conservation Coalition.
History
The British Conservation Alliance was formed in September 2019 'by a non-partisan group of millennials who saw a glaring gap in the political market when it came to market-based, sensible environmentalism'[1] and was also announced by the President of the American Conservation Coalition, Benji Backer in the United States Congress on the 20th.[2] Writing in The Telegraph that same week, Christopher Barnard set out his vision for a wider conservative involvement in environmental matters.[3]
Receiving much external coverage upon its launch, the British Conservation Alliance saw much criticism from Vice [4] in an article that delved deep into their aspirations as well as their operational capabilities, garnering more sympathetic support from BusinessGreen [5] in the same period.
The organisation's Board of Advisors includes Amber Rudd, former Home Secretary; Lawrence Reed President Emeritus of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE); Ryan Shorthouse, Founder and Chief Executive of Bright Blue; and former politician, Charles Hendry CBE.[6]
In December 2020, it was announced by Matthew Elliott, former Chief Executive of Vote Leave, that the British Conservation Alliance would receive £10,000 in prize money from the policy entrepreneurship competition held by BrexitCentral and ConservativeHome.[7]
Mission
According to the stated mission on their website, the British Conservation Alliance's 'mission is to change the narrative on environmental discussions in Britain, by actively empowering a new generation of leaders to promote free-enterprise and market-based solutions to protecting Britain's beautiful environment.'[1]
Political activity
Green Market Revolution
In June 2020, the British Conservation Alliance published, Green Market Revolution: How Market Environmentalism Can Protect Nature and Save the Planet[8] with the Austrian Economics Center,[9] authored by over 15 pro-market and environmental figures and organisations, including Daniel Hannan. A review by Forbes CEO, Steve Forbes described the publication as "a timely, calm, fact-based presentation by eminent experts on the crucial issue of protecting the planet, that is persuasive and a healthy antidote to the hysteria surrounding this issue."[10]
Clean Capitalism: A Post-COVID Pathway to Economic and Ecological Recovery
In December 2020, the BCA published the policy paper entitled Clean Capitalism: A Post-COVID Pathway to Economic and Ecological Recovery[11] detailing how the United Kingdom can best recover from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic through the implementation of Clean Asset bonds, reducing tariffs on medical technology imports during the COVID recovery period, and halting the UK's membership in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, until Investor–State Dispute Settlement Provisions (ISDS), which prevent decarbonisation of the UK energy sector, are repealed; amongst other recommendations.[citation needed]
Student advocacy
The British Conservation Alliance currently has over thirty university campus coordinators across the United Kingdom[12], generating a comprehensive network of students and the largest environmental campus network in the UK.[citation needed]
Youth Environment Summit (YES!)
In May 2021 it was announced the BCA would convene a conference of youth climate leaders from across the globe at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.[citation needed]
