The British Rail Class 951 is reserved for diesel-electric multiple units which have been repurposed and used for departmental use. They were used for applyng of sandite, and de-icing. Some are also used to tow other trains. The 951 is no longer in use.
Units were originally numbered from 1066 onwards. This was because the first unit converted were former Hastings units, and 1066 was the year the Battle of Hastings occurred. Units were subsequently renumbered into the 951066-070 range, although not all units survived long enough in traffic to receive their new set number. The main units are dealt with below.
