British Rifle Corps was a short lived Francophobe paramilitary club in Lower Canada.

History[edit]

Formed on 12 December 1835 at a meeting in the Jones Long Room in Montreal by radical Montreal Anglophones in the lead up to the Lower Canada Rebellion and countering the Patriote movement.[1]

It was forced to disband on 20 January 1836[2] under the order of Governor-General of British North America and Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford.[3] Members, including Adam Thom, went on to form the equally miltant Doric Club and the more subdued Montreal British Legion.[4]
