Brunettia is a genus of moth flies in the family Psychodidae, subfamily Psychodinae. The genus was established by Nelson Annandale in 1910[1] and is placed within the tribe Brunettiini. Species of Brunettia are distributed widely in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, with more than 110 described species.[2][3]
Taxonomy
Brunettia belongs to the subfamily Psychodinae, the most species-rich group within Psychodidae.[2] Phylogenetic and morphological studies recognize four subgenera within the genus.[4]
The genus is defined by a combination of morphological characters, including 13 antennal flagellomeres, distinctive wing venation, and specialized male genitalia.[2]
Distribution and ecology
Species of Brunettia occur throughout tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Neotropics, but are absent from the Nearctic region.[2]
Larvae develop in moist, organic-rich environments such as decaying vegetation, wet soil, and stream margins, consistent with other members of the family Psychodidae.
