Buchwald Jewelers is a family-owned jewelry retailer located in the Seybold Building in downtown Miami, Florida. History
Founding and early locations
Joseph Buchwald, a Hungarian immigrant, founded the business in 1932.[1][2] Before settling in downtown Miami, the family operated stores in Antwerp, Belgium; on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey; on 34th Street in Manhattan, New York; and on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach.[1][2] The Lincoln Road location operated through the late 1950s. According to Jeff Buchwald, the family relocated to downtown Miami around 1960.[3]

Seybold Building (1960–present)
In 1960, Buchwald Jewelers moved into the Seybold Building at 36 NE 1st Street, becoming the first jewelry retailer in the building.[3][1][2] At the time, the building was primarily occupied by law offices and small retailers.[1][3] Buchwald's arrival is credited as the start of a trend that drew additional jewelers to the building over the following decades. Through the 1960s, additional New York jewelers followed, and during the 1960s–1980s a significant number of Cuban-American jewelers established shops in the building. By the 1970s, the Seybold Building had become almost exclusively dedicated to the jewelry trade,[2][3] eventually becoming the largest jewelry building in Florida and the second-largest jewelry center in the United States after New York's Diamond District.[2][3]
Family succession
Robert "Bobby" Buchwald led the business as second-generation owner beginning in 1968. Around 2004, his nephews Jeff and Marc Buchwald — Joseph Buchwald's grandsons — assumed operations of the business as the third generation of family ownership.[1][2]
Operations
Buchwald Jewelers sells GIA-certified diamonds, engagement rings, wedding bands, and luxury timepieces, including watches from brands such as Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Hublot, Breitling, TAG Heuer, and Baume & Mercier.[2] Additional services include custom jewelry design, jewelry and watch repair, and appraisals.[1][2] The company is licensed as a pawnbroker and provides collateral loans secured by jewelry and watches.[2] It is a member of Jewelers of America and the National Pawnbrokers Association.[2]
