OriginP. Podaras, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA

Buddleja 'Podaras10', selling name Flutterby Petite Dark Pink, is a sterile hybrid cultivar that Peter Podaras raised while at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and that Cornell patented in 2011. Flutterby Petite Dark Pink was derived from the crossing of two unnamed B. davidii × B. alternifolia hybrids.[1]

Description[edit]

Flutterby Petite Dark Pink makes a small shrub with a broad, outwardly-spreading habit creating a wide, inverted triangle shape. Growing to a maximum of 1.2 × 1.5 m, the shrub bears compound terminal and axillary panicles about 9 cm long by 3 cm wide, comprising around 115 faintly fragrant dark-violet flowers. The flowers emerge in spring and persist until the first frosts of the fall. The opposite, narrowly elliptical dark green leaves are very small, about 5.2 cm long by 1.5 cm wide, pubescent above and below.[1][2]

Cultivation[edit]

Flutterby Petite Dark Pink was introduced to Europe in 2012 by Plantipp, The Netherlands, as part of the Free Petite series.[3] In the United Kingdom, several specimens were introduced to the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens (NCCPG)'s National Plant Collection at the Longstock Park Nursery near Stockbridge, Hampshire.[4] The shrub is reputedly hardy to - 29° C., USDA zone 5 - 10.
