Built to Expire

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Built to Expire is a post-rock duo from Hastings, New Zealand and is composed of multi-instrumentalist Kazuki Hiratani and guitarist/keyboardist Jason Dutton. The band formed in 2019 under the name The Living Ghouls, but after deciding their band name was too edgy, they changed it to Built to Expire.

Debut self-titled EP and first studio album

In December 2019, the band started writing for what would become their first self-titled EP. The project originally started with the goal of releasing an album, but both members felt like they should release an EP first to try and expand their audience. After a week of recording in Hiratani's home studio, the band recorded four songs for the EP, those being "Famine", "Time Ticks By", "Alive", and "My Weight to Carry". "Built to Expire EP" was released on November 7th, 2020. The EP didn't gain that much traction on release, and the band has gone on to say to peers that they aren't proud of how it turned out.

In 2021, the band reconvened at Hiratani's home studio to start working on their first album. The band recorded and released two tracks: a re-recording of Time Ticks By from their debut EP, and a new track "Break". The band is very fond of these songs, however, weren't quite happy with how the mixes turned out. A month after recording the songs, the band went on an indefinite hiatus.

In June 2022, the band reunited in secrecy and started working on more material for the album. After a few months of writing, on October 27th, the band put out the first track from the album, entitled "the time is now", which the album takes it's name from. The band is currently writing and recording the rest of the album in Hiratani's new home studio, with the goal of releasing the record over the New Year.
