Bulleit Rye is a small batch straight rye whiskey produced in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, by MGP (Midwest Grain Producers), a former Seagrams Distillery, for the Bulleit Distilling Company (owned by Diageo). It is bottled at 90 U.S. proof (45% alcohol by volume).[1]

Its mash bill is 95% rye and 5% malted barley, in contrast to most American ryes, which contain varying proportions of corn in their mash bills.[1]

History - Cocktail Culture and Renewed Demand for Rye Whiskey[edit]

In 1987, founder Tom Bulleit began distilling a high rye bourbon whiskey, and the Bulleit Distilling Company later became an operating division in the Diageo family of beverage alcohol brands in 2001.

Renewed popularity of both classic and new cocktails began in cities like London, New York and San Francisco around the turn of the 21st Century. A staple in American bars through Prohibition, rye whiskey was a necessary element in many classic American cocktails, most notably the Old Fashioned. Accordingly , demand for rye whiskey from professional and amateur mixologists grew.[2] [3]

In 2011, Bulleit Distilling Co. introduced Bulleit Rye. Subsequently, many other bourbon brands, including Knob Creek, Old Forester, Woodford Reserve and Jim Beam introduced rye whiskeys as brand extensions. The category continued to grow and case depletions are estimated to have exceeded 1 million cases in 2019, more than doubling compared to five years earlier. By 2020, Bulleit rye led the category, with a share of over 40% and estimated depletions of nearly 500,000 cases annually.[4]

Bulleit Rye Reviews[edit]

31 Whiskey – “Usually I look to Bulleit to be the definition of “middle of the road,” but in this case I think they actually went above. This is a pretty darn good experience for the price you pay, bringing not only that expected rye spice but also some other tricks to the party that make it a worthwhile thing to try out.”[5]

Breakingbourbon.com – “A rye with a flavor profile and age statement that's increasingly rare to find in today’s marketplace, all at a great price.”[6]

Whiskyoftheweek.com (UK) – “RATING: EXCELLENT What a delicious rye whiskey! Probably my favourite rye so far. Spiciness to let you know you are drinking rye, but enough sweetness and balance to make it easy drinking and inviting.  I love it.  Now to go and play with this rye whiskey and make some cocktails.”[7]

Bulleit Rye Awards[edit]

San Francisco World Spirits Competition - 2013[8], 2011[9]: Double Gold Medal; 2015[10], 2014[11], 2012[12]: Gold Medal
