The Buraku-ji (豊楽寺) is a temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism in Ōtoyo, Kōchi. It is one of the three Yakushi temples in Japan.[A 1]
History[edit]
The temple was first established in 724 by the priest Gyōki. The main hall (本堂), named Yakushi-dō, (薬師堂) is the oldest building on the island of Shikoku. The hall is a registered treasure of Japan.
In 1572, Chōsokabe Motochika (長曾我部 元親; 1539–1599) ordered the hall to be repaired. It was again repaired in 1631, this time at the order of Yamauchi Tadayoshi (山内 忠義; 1592–1665).
Treasures of the Temple[edit]
In the main hall there is a Amida-Nyorai, a Yakushi-Nyorai and a Shaka-Nyorai. The three sitting figures are about 120 cm tall and are made out of Hinoki. All three figures are registered as Important Cultural Properties.
