Burb (Cannabis)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Burb is a cannabis brand based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. The company was founded in 2018 by Johnny Kaye, Clayton Chessa and Steve Dowsley and has three cannabis retail stores operating in the Metro-Vancouver area.[1]

The Burb brand includes cannabis retail stores, hemp wear/streetwear apparel and a weekly podcast called Light Culture hosted by David Hershkovits (co-founder of Paper Magazine).

History[edit]

In 2018, founders Johnny Kaye, Clayton Chessa and Steve Dowsley joined together to create the Vancouver-based cannabis brand.[2] Having grown up in Metro Vancouver, they decided to name the brand “Burb” as an ode to the suburbs and also as a combination of the words “burn” and “herb”, an insider's verb they created used to describe smoking cannabis.[3]

CEO and Creative Director Johnny Kaye, a former touring musician, investment banker and denim designer initially partnered with Chessa to create Northern Vine Labs - one of the first federally licensed cannabis testing labs in Canada located in Langley, British Columbia.[4] The lab operated for two years before being acquired by Emerald Health Therapeutics in 2017. After the sale, Kaye connected with Steve Dowsley who had just exited a steel fabrication business, Fox Fab, and the three started Burb shortly thereafter. They secured a seed investment from Harvest One, a licensed cannabis company in Canada, and built Burb’s first two retail locations in 2018.

Brand[edit]

Burb produced comfortable ready to wear collections from Canadian-sourced hemp/cotton fabrics. The brand collaborates frequently with local and international artists, musicians, designers and creatives in various product categories. Burb has been featured in numerous international press outlets including Forbes, Nylon, Hypebeast, Rolling Stone, Hypebae, Surface, Billboard, Complex and worn by notable hip/hop musicians DaBaby, Gunna, Famous Dex, Rae Sremmurd, WondaGurl among others. Burb’s instagram channel is followed by influencers and celebrities Seth Rogan, Carter Cruise, Wires Only, Clara Berry, Jerome Lamaar, JaQuel Knight, Eli Morgan Gesner, Roger Gastman, Angelo Baque and others.

Burb has hosted various events including artist smoke lounges and most notably Ricky Powell’s last live “Slideshow” in Vancouver BC on January 31, 2020 held at Fortune Sound Club.[5]

Stores[edit]

The first Burb store opened in April 2018 - a large flagship location featuring Burb branded apparel and accessories, as well as cannabis products from regional growers.[6] The interior was designed by Jennifer Dunn, a designer who’s also worked with Vancouver brands Saje Natural Wellness and Aritzia.[7][8] Burb’s stores have been described as chic and minimal - each of the companies three stores varies in size but maintains the same contemporary aesthetic.[9]

Light Culture Podcast[edit]

Burb teamed up with Paper Magazine co-founder David Hershkovits to create and produce a weekly podcast called Light Culture. In it, David sits down with various ‘cultural disruptors’, and key creatives of our era. Notable figures who have appeared on the podcast include Rose McGowan, Ricky Powell, Lady Bunny, Marcus Samuelsson, Matty Matheson, Sarah Andelman, Boo Johnson, Fab 5 Freddy, Steven Smith, June Ambrose, April Walker, Roger Gastman, Futura, Kenny Scharf, Glen Friedman, Angelo Baque, Isaac Mizrahi, B-real, Sherbinskis, Shepard Fairey and more.[10]

David has been immersed in pop-culture since 1984 as a founder, editor, and writer of Paper Magazine. His interests tread on topics such as the rise of hip hop, indie film, fashion and streetwear, and cannabis culture.

Cannabis Products[edit]

In 2021 Burb signed two licensing agreements; one with Citizen Stash (Experion Wellness) to launch Burb-branded cannabis products in the Canadian recreational cannabis market and with Martin Holdings LLC (a company co-owned by rapper Problem and NBA player DeMar DeRozan) to launch Burb-branded cannabis products in the California market under license.[11]
