Bureau 749 is a 2024 Chinese mainland science fiction action-adventure film directed by Lu Chuan and starring Wang Junkai, Miao Miao, Zheng Kai, Ren Min, Xin Baiqing and Zhang Junning. The film was inspired by Lu Chuan's work experience at Bureau 749 after graduating from military school. It was released in mainland China on October 1, 2024, during the National Day holiday.[2][3] Bureau 749 was a box office failure, with criticism for its plot, acting, and special effects, and its box office revenue also failed.[4][5][6][7][8].

Bureau 749 was a military research institute established in the early days of the People's Republic of China. It was responsible for researching new weapons and equipment, and involved fields such as the supernatural and human special abilities[9]

Production
The film began principal photography in Chongqing in October 2018, and was filmed in Beijing, Chongqing, and Lanzhou. The filming period lasted for 9 months. Reshoots were announced on March 14, 2024, and the film was officially wrapped on April 22 of the same year. The production process lasted 8 years.[10][11][12]

Reception
The reputation of Bureau 749 is mostly negative, and its box office performance is not good.[14][15]The Douban movie website scored only 3.4 points, which is better than 0% of science fiction and action movies.[16] The plot, actors, and directors were all criticized.[17] On April 25, 2025, it won the 16th Golden Broom Award for the most disappointing film, the most disappointing director, and the most disappointing screenwriter.
