[5]

History[edit]

The Burnsville Police Department was formed in July 1964 soon after the incorporation of Burnsville. It consisted of a chief, a lieutenant, a sergeant, seven officers and a department secretary. In 1968 the department also took on the role of fire and rescue services in Burnsville and all Burnsville police officers officially became "Burnsville Public Safety Officers" after being cross-trained as firefighters as well as police officers. This joint public safety department lasted until 1981 when the experimental department ended and the police and fire split to reform their own separate departments that continue to serve Burnsville today. In 1969 the department made a change from its more typical brown police-style uniform and issued blue blazers to all officers instead as the standard uniform, something of a radical change at the time. The blue blazer uniforms were replaced by more typical modern day blue police-style uniforms in 1977 and continue to be the type of uniform worn today by Burnsville officers. [6]

Today[edit]

Today the Burnsville Police Department continues to grow and modernize whilst delivering a full range of police services to serve and protect the people and property of Burnsville and live up to the departments motto which is Integrity, Honor, Courage, Excellence, Knowledge. The department employs many different common and specialist police units and officers including the Patrol unit, Investigations unit, BLUE in the School (SRO's) unit, Community Resources unit, Domestic Abuse Response unit, Tactical Team, Negotiation/Hostage/Crisis Management Team, Field Training Officers, K-9 Unit, Physical unit, Evidence Officers, Traffic Unit, and Use of Force Instructors. All of these units are made up and staffed by the 75 sworn officers and 19 civilian personnel that work for the department which include the chief, 3 captains, 14 sergeants, 57 officers and the other civilian support personnel. [7] [8] The department was the first in the state of Minnesota to introduce body-worn cameras to its officers in the summer of 2010 and rolled them out to all officers by the end of 2011. [9]

The department's current police station was built in 1988 and is located at 100 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville, MN 55337. The station underwent a major $13.3 million dollar renovation starting in the summer of 2017 which included the enlargement of rooms and office space, a new secure public entrance area, and for the first time in the departments history a large secure parking garage to store and service the departments vehicle fleet which currently consists of Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor's, Ford Police Interceptor Utility's and Chevrolet Tahoe SUV's as well as others. The newly renovated station was re-opened in February 2018. [10]
