Draft:BURU

BURU is an American women's apparel brand founded in 2013 by fashion designer and entrepreneur Morgan Hutchinson. The company is known for small-batch collections, deadstock textiles, and a vertically integrated production model centered on its downtown Los Angeles factory.[1][2]

History

BURU was founded by Morgan Hutchinson in 2013 after Hutchinson experienced difficulty finding clothing that was compatible with breastfeeding and early motherhood.[1][3] The name BURU is derived from pinyin and loosely translates to "to breastfeed" in Mandarin.[1][4]

The brand initially operated as a curated marketplace carrying other labels before shifting to Hutchinson's own designs. According to Fashionista, since 2019 BURU has consisted solely of Hutchinson's designs.[1]

Manufacturing and business model

BURU operates a factory in downtown Los Angeles where its design, sampling, cutting, sewing, and fulfillment take place under one roof.[1] Glossy reported that the company owns a Los Angeles "microfactory" with a team of approximately 40 employees, including sewers and pattern makers.[2]

The brand uses deadstock fabrics, vintage buttons, and upcycled trims in its domestic production.[1][4] Its small-batch model allows the company to produce limited runs and respond to demand by reissuing popular silhouettes in new fabrics or colors.[1]

Retail

BURU operates brick-and-mortar boutiques in Charleston, South Carolina; New York City; and Palm Beach, Florida.[5]

In 2024, BURU opened a permanent storefront at The Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina.[6]

The company later expanded its physical retail presence with boutiques on Manhattan's Upper East Side and on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, Florida.[7][8]

Media coverage

BURU has been covered by fashion and business publications including Fashionista, Glossy, Forbes, Ethos, Charleston Magazine, and Motherly.[1][2][9][4][6][3]
