Busan Biennale

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Busan Biennale is a biannual international contemporary art show held in Busan, South Korea. It was established (when) integrated three different art events held in the city in 1998: the Busan Youth Biennale, the first biennale of Korea that was voluntarily organized by local artists in 1981; the Sea Art Festival, an environmental art festival launched in 1987 with the sea serving as a backdrop; and the Busan International Outdoor Sculpture Symposium that was first held in 1991. The exhibition was previously called the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival (PICAF) before it launched.

Busan Biennale is held in even-numbered years, and is hosted by Busan metropolitan city and Busan Biennale Organizing Committee.[1]

Events and programming

The goal of official programs provided by Busan Biennale is connecting and expanding each exhibition. Throughout the programs, Busan Biennale discusses directivity and methods of communicating with Busan citizens and putting together local Busan artists. Depending on the theme of Biennale and projects of director, the details of the program are different. But normally it includes scholarship symposium and educational program. In Busan Biennale 2016, which is the latest exhibition, there were international academic programs[2], warming-up projects, education programs and Channel B which consists of performances of local artists.[3]

Exhibition history

The Busan Biennale is a biannual international contemporary art show that integrated three different art events held in the city in 1998: the Busan Youth Biennale, the first Biennale of Korea that was voluntarily organized by local artists in 1981; the Sea Art Festival, an environmental art festival launched in 1987 with the sea serving as a backdrop; and the Busan International Outdoor Sculpture Symposium that was first held in 1991. The Biennale was previously called the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival (PICAF) before it launched.

Furthermore, rather than simply adhere to the white cube but chose unexpected places including culturally backward regions and old industry facilities as exhibition halls, Busan Biennale illuminates Busan city and contributes balanced development within Busan.[4]

Unlike the previous editions for which the Busan Museum of Art in city’s district of Haeundae served as the main venue, the upcoming Biennale will host its exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, located on the island of Eulsukdo.

The upcoming Biennale takes place under the title, ‘Divided We Stand,’ from 8 September to 11 November 2018.[5]

Unlike the previous editions for which the Busan Museum of Art in city’s district of Haeundae served as the main venue, the upcoming Biennale will host its exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, located on the island of Eulsukdo, which was designed and built as the main venue for the Biennale.[6] Past Busan Biennales have utilized various places in Busan as its special exhibition places, bringing fresh cultural vitality into Busan. In the example at the top, KISWIRE Suyeong factory (it is called ‘F1963’ currently) being used for special exhibition hall and main exhibition hall for Busan Biennale 2014 and Busan Biennale 2016 respectively. As of today, F1963 branded itself as one of the most famous culture complexes in Busan. Also, it is considered as a model case of urban regeneration.[7]
