Buse Babadağ (born in 1995) is a Turkish ballet dancer based in the United States. She is recognized as the first Turkish ballerina to attain principal dancer status in the U.S.[1][2][3][4][5] Her career includes classical and contemporary repertoire, international guest performances, and media coverage in both Turkish and international press.[6][7] She is a principal dancer at Ballet San Antonio[8]
Early life
Buse Babadağ was born in Turkey. She began ballet training at the age of 11 and studied at the Istanbul University State Conservatory until her second year of high school.
During her second year, she auditioned for the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Ballett-Akademie München. After being accepted, she left the conservatory to continue her training in Munich, where she studied from 2011 to 2014 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in dance.
During her training, she studied both classical and contemporary ballet and participated in performances and competitions.
Career
Babadağ is a ballet dancer who has performed with several ballet companies in the United States for over a decade.
She joined Ballet San Antonio in 2021 as a soloist and was later promoted to principal dancer[9][10] in her fourth season with the company. She was invited to join the company by then artistic director Sofiane Sylve[11]. With the company, she has performed leading roles including Giselle, the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, and Kitri in Don Quixote.
She previously performed as a company artist with Indianapolis Ballet from 2018 to 2021, where her repertoire included works by George Balanchine, including Serenade and Rubies.
From 2015 to 2018, she was a principal artist with Dance Alive National Ballet, performing in productions such as Swan Lake and Carmina Burana. From 2014 to 2015, she performed with Tulsa Ballet as a company artist.
She has also appeared in musical theatre, performing as a Jet Girl (Pauline) in West Side Story at the San Pedro Playhouse.[12]
As a guest artist, Babadağ has also performed with Istanbul Junior Ballet[13][14][15][16][17]in Turkey and has conducted ballet workshops.
