Butch (DJ)
Bülent Gürler, aka Butch is a DJ and producer from Mainz, Germany. His rise to fame started in 2007 when he first began releasing on labels such as Trapez, and continued with the success of tracks like ‘No Worries’ (2010) ‘Dope’ (2015) and Countach (2018).[1][2][3][4]
His productions combine a wide range of genres including house, techno, minimal, and acid.
Career
Early years
Butch first discovered his interest in DJ’ing in 1992 after watching the DMC World DJ Championships. He began by playing jazz, RnB, and hip hop records, practicing up to 8 hours a day to learn to scratch and beat-match.[5]
It was his older brother that introduced him to techno from recordings he'd made from the radio. Although it bears little resemblance to the music he produces and plays today, it was pivotal in the development of his music taste.[5]
As a DJ
He describes his style of DJing as having a constant flow, avoiding hard cuts to keep the audience in a state of hypnosis.[5][6]
Over the years he has cultivated residencies in clubs such as Robert Johnson, DC10, Pacha, Watergate. He has also taken the stage at festivals including, Love Family Park, Creamfields, Loveland, Tomorrowland etc.[7][8][9]
In 2019 Butch began his OTHERSIDE Sunday residency at Griessmuehle in Berlin.[10]
Butch also has his own YouTube series ‘Butch TV’, in which he talks about life on tour, his music and answers questions from viewers in a humorous manner.[11]
As a Producer
Butch's productions vary quite drastically, from minimal loops to techno tracks with big breakdowns. He's released on a large number of labels.[12]
Butch received critical acclaim for many of his releases, being cited as Newcomer of the Year, Track of the Year and Best Producer by Groove Magazine, and receiving 13th Best Album and Best Track of the year from Mixmag.[13]
In 2013 Butch began his collaboration with Ricardo Villalobos. Under the combined alias of ButRic they have produced two psychedelic minimal EPs. The first was released on Villalobos’ own label Sei Es Drum, the second on the German label Otherside.[14][15][16]
