The Butser IX Legion is a British classical reenactment and living history society constituted in 2015 for the purpose of "...engag[ing] and inform[ing] the public about a range of different roles in the Roman world through re-enactment, interaction and demonstration. The organisation also aims to provide a facility for likeminded people to gather and share their interest and passion for ancient Rome". The name of the Legion comes from the shields ( scutae ) which bear the insignia of Legio IX Hispana, one of the 3 legions who invaded Britain under Emperor Claudius.

Butser IX Legion is based at and affiliated in its constitution to Butser Ancient Farm..[1]

History[edit]

In 2013 the volunteer coordinator at Butser Ancient Farm, Ryan Watts, created a new volunteer group within the farm called the Butser IX legion in order to encourage the volunteers to focus on specifically Roman activities . In 2015 the Legion was constituted by Ryan as an affiliated organisation in order to allow the Legion to become self governing but remain attached to the farm.

Education[edit]

The legion aims to interact with as many members of the public as possible in order to communicate the excitement of Roman history. Therefore the legion has been involved in plays, shows[2] and events throughout Southern England since its inception. Members of the public are encouraged to wear, taste, touch, smell and use articles displayed by the Legion at these events and to join in with the demonstrations.

As part of its educational program the legion teaches the public how to prepare Roman food using recipes from original sources such as Apicius.

Activities and equipment[edit]

The focus of the Legion has always been on working with and educating the general public about the Romans especially the period of their presence in Britain.

Once a month during summer it performs at Butser Ancient Farm[3] and this allows members to interact with Iron Age and Saxon reenactors at the farm.

The legion aims to use equipment and clothing as authentically as it can.

All orders to the soldiers are issued in Latin during reenactments and members of the legion are encouraged to repair and clean their equipment using techniques available 2000 years ago.
