Butterfree is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon media franchise, and the evolved form of Metapod, an evolution of Caterpie. First introduced in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue, it is one of the first Pokémon available to the player and evolves sooner than most other species. Since its debut, Butterfree has appeared in multiple games, including Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game, as well as various merchandise.
Butterfree is both a Bug and Flying-type Pokémon. It resembles a butterfly, with white wings featuring black patterns, antennae, red compound eyes, and a two-segment purple body with blue hands and feet.
Conception and development[edit]
Butterfree is part of the fictional creatures called Pokémon created for the Pokémon media franchise by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. The franchise began in 1996 with Pokémon Red and Green for the Game Boy, later released in North America as Pokémon Red and Blue in 1998. In these games, players assume the role of a Trainer whose goal is to capture and use Pokémon's special abilities to combat others. A major goal is to complete the Pokédex by capturing and evolving all Pokémon species.
When designing the games, the team initially created pixel art sprites with a single color identity to work within the Super Game Boy's limitations. Developed as a group effort, Sugimori later re-drew the species to give the game a unified look while maintaining the original artists' styles.[1]
Design[edit]
Butterfree is an insect-like Pokémon resembling a butterfly. It has a purple body with two segments, blue mouth, hands, and feet, red compound eyes, antennae, and white wings with black patterns. It evolves from Metapod, a green chrysalis form that evolves from Caterpie, a green caterpillar-like Pokémon.[2]
Appearances[edit]
Butterfree first appeared in Pokémon Red and Blue and has since appeared in many main series titles, including Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. In the anime, Butterfree is a Pokémon of protagonist Ash Ketchum, evolving from a Caterpie he caught. Its departure in the anime is considered one of the most touching moments in the series.
Reception[edit]
Butterfree has received generally positive reception. IGN appreciated that Butterfree is a Pokémon obtainable early through evolution and useful against early in-game opponents.[3] The episode "Bye-Bye Butterfree" is noted for causing many fans to cry over Butterfree's departure.[4]
