Byung-Nak Song

Byung-Nak Song (born August 15, 1939) is a Korean economist. Currently, he is an emeritus professor of economics at Seoul National University (SNU) and president of the Freedom and Creativity Institute.

Biography

He received his bachelor’s degree of economics from SNU in 1963. After two years of military service as a Lieutenant in the Korean army, he went to the SNU Graduate School of Business Administration (the first Korean business school established in 1966) for a master’s degree. He did his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Southern California (1967-1970).

Academic career

He started as a research fellow at the John Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (1970-1971), joined the Korean Development Institute (KDI) as a senior fellow (1971-1980), and became a professor of economics at SNU (1981-2004) and served as a vice president of SNU (1998-2000). He was a visiting professor of economics at numerous places including the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (1974-1975) and Harvard University (1990-1991).

He has served as the head of the Industrial Policy Division at the KDI, chairman of the Center for Free Enterprise, Fair Trade Commissioner for the Fair Trade Commission, outside director for LG Electronics, and endowed professor of strategy at the POSCO School of Strategy (2010-2012). He has done consultancy work for numerous Korean institutions including the Economic Planning Board, and international organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, United Nations, among others.

He has published 18 books including 4 cartoon books (with Korean cartoonist Won-bok Rhie) and numerous articles in prestigious academic journals including Econometrica and the Review of Economics and Statistics.
