Chinya Ramachandrarao Sathya a.k.a C. R. Sathya (born August 12, 1942) is an Indian aerospace engineer, composite technology expert, and author. He is a recipient of the Karnataka Sahithya Academy award.

He is the Former Group Director, Composites Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO; and Ex. Senior Vice President, TATA Advanced Materials Ltd., Bengaluru.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Sathya is the grandson of A R Krishna Shastry, a prominent writer, researcher, and translator in the Kannada language.

Sathya completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Mysore in 1964. He then completed his Post Graduate Training in Nuclear Sciences and Technology from Bhabha Atomic Energy Establishment, Mumbai, in 1965.

Career[edit]

Sathya started his career as a Rocket Engineer at Thumba Rocket Launching Station at Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram. He designed all structural and payload devices required for sounding rockets, payload integration, and payload qualification.

Later he switched to Composite nosecones and rocket motor tubes, eventually working full time on Composites technology, first as Head of Fibreglass Laboratory and later as Group Director, Composites.

While in ISRO, he was also a Consultant to Tata Group to set up their first commercial venture in Composites at Bangalore, the Tata Advanced Materials Limited, to which he joined as its Senior Vice President - Technology after resigning from ISRO in 1989. He planned and built the Company to International standards in Bangalore and developed a team to design and manufacture highly sophisticated composites for Defence, Telecommunication, and Medical Industries.

Sathya is also the author of articles in Kannada since 1959 in Koravanji and now in Aparanji. The first publication was titled “Aache mane Subammange Ekaadashi Upvaasa” when he was a student of BMS College in the year 1959.

He is a Member Trustee of Thoreau Foundation at Bengaluru who took leadership to technically revive Hebbal Lake. He presented an execution idea to the Government of Karnataka, which formed a trust to execute the project. He was involved in its revival until Lake Authority took over the lake.

C R Sathya’s photograph (on the right) walking next to the bicycle carrying a rocket nose cone at Thumba Rocket Station is now an iconic picture in media. This photo was taken by the renowned French humanist photographer, Henri Cartier Bresson. Thumba became Vikram Sarabahi Centre later and here he established ISRO’s Composite Technology Group which now gives all the key Composite products for ISRO’s Satellites and PSLV/GSLV launch vehicles.
