C8910
C8910 is a blend of human fatty acids (octanoic, nonanoic and decanoic) that are naturally found on human skin, but for this product, artificially made from palm kernel oil or coconut oil and beef tallow. The product consists of a mixture of C8, C9 and C10 fatty acids in the proportion 1:1:1; the active ingredients form 15% of the product.[1]
This artificial blend has been shown to act as a repellent to biting insects such as mosquitoes, horn flies and stable flies.[1][2][3] Higher concentrations of this blend have also shown to have insecticidal properties against certain groups of insects including malaria-causing mosquitoes[3][4][5]. The blend has been shown to have a repellency effect against nuisance insects and used as an ectoparasiticide against insects like house flies in cattle[6]. Some components of this blend are used as food additives.[2] Direct bee toxicity is unavailable but it is suggested to be used as a miticide against Varroa mites that affect bees.
