It allows organizations to create competencies and then map them to departments, roles, and locations across an enterprise.[1]

Competency Manager software[edit]

CABEM Technologies has created a software program called Competency Manager. Designed to build competency and credentialing programs for any workforce, it provides training for individuals and risk management for the organization. It allows you to upload, track, renew and report various certifications and credentials required by workplace standards. It allows for all learning, whether experiential, mentorship, or peer-to-peer, to be captured and documented formally within a software system[2]This competency management tool helps identify competency gaps and then directs personalized learning through a web based learning environment. Competency Manager is a framework that addresses all three components of competency management: behaviors, credentials, and skills.[3]

CJIS Manager[edit]

CABEM Technologies has created an online tool called CJIS Manager. It can be used to guide, track, and report compliance with CJIS standards (Criminal Justice Information Services). Criminal justice and law enforcement agencies use CJIS databases to catch lawbreakers, perform background checks, and track criminal activity.[4]

Critical Components of Competency Management[edit]

Behavioral Competencies/ Soft skills[edit]

A behavioral competency, or soft skill, is any behavior, attitude, or personality trait that is critical to success in a specific role in an organization. It is an observable behavior that proves an employee possesses a particular competency. Well established soft skills for specific job roles help a management team determine which behavioral skills their employees need to develop.[5]

Credentials[edit]

Credentialing is the formal process of determining the qualifications of professionals and assessing their background and legitimacy. Some examples of credentials are certifications, degrees, diplomas, licenses, and certificates. Credentialing uses an established series of guidelines to ensure that employees undergo stringent scrutiny regarding their qualifications and training.[6]

Skills[edit]

A skill is the ability to perform an action to create the desired result. In any industry, an employee has a unique set of skills needed to accomplish the job each day. In competency management, the key skills necessary for an employee to reach target performance in their specific role are identified. Then those skills are developed and optimized to best align with the business strategy of an organization.[7]

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standards[edit]

ISO Standards are standards that are agreed upon by experts in a subject area. The standards cover a huge range of subjects and can be about making a product, managing a product, delivering a service, or supplying materials. The standards are for just about every sector of business. The standards are constantly being revised to account for changes in the environment, technology, social attitude, and legislation.[8]

  • ISO 9000 is a quality management standard first published in 1987. It is updated every 7 years. These standards ensure that an organization meets the needs of any customer or stakeholder. [8]
  • AS9100 is a quality management system for the aerospace industry. Compliance with this set of standards is required by aerospace manufacturers and suppliers as a condition for doing any business with them. [8]
  • IATF 16949 is a quality management standard that applies to the development, production, installation, and servicing of automotive related products. The standards goal is to improve the system and process quality in order to improve customer satisfaction, and to identify problems and risks in the production process and supply chain. [8]
  • ISO /IEC 17025 is the standard used by testing and calibration laboratories. Most labs must hold accreditation in order to be considered technically competent.
  • ISO 14000 is a family of standards relating to the protection of the environment. These standards help organizations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment. [8]
