CBL-D is a Debian based Linux operating system built by Microsoft.[1]

Overview[edit]

CBL-D is built and compiled by Microsoft to help guard against Supply chain attack.[2] The current release of CBL-D (quinault)[3] is based off of Debian 10 (buster) and can be run as a VM, container, or in the Windows subsystem for Linux (WSL)[4] and updated with APT/dpkg.[5]

CBL-D is cloud optimized and used for the Azure Cloud Shell and gives users a popular modern and familiar Linux interface[6] as well as includes Azure cloud utilities like the az cli (Azure Command Line Interface).[7]

Being based off Debian gives cloud developers a large ecosystem of compatible software[8] to develop and build on top of. The Microsoft Build of OpenJDK is also available for CBL-D.[9]
