CHAD: A Fallout 76 Story is a fan-made dark humor serial podcast created by Kenneth Vigue that is set in the Fallout video game universe and part of the Robots Radio Network.[1]. Its direct setting is derived from Fallout 76, but diverges from the events of the game with new characters and some alternative lore around key events and backstories of notable characters such as the Overseer. CHAD: A Fallout 76 Story follows the conflict of two main characters who emerge from Vault 76 on Reclamation Day: Simon Rex (Kenneth Vigue), a struggling "sad sack" who is later revealed to be a false protagonist and Chad Johnson (Alexander Luthor), an athletic and complicated anti-hero. The series features an ensemble cast of voice actors with several notable guest stars, including Pete Hines, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Communication at Bethesda Softworks[2]. The series is most notable for achieving rapid acclaim within the Fallout community[3][4], before being officially recognized by Bethesda Game Studios in February 2020 with an invitation to perform live at Bethesda Game Days[5][6][7] in Boston, Massachusetts.
As of July 2020, the series has been downloaded and listened to over 160,000 times.[8]
The podcast airs on a monthly basis, usually released on a Sunday and has now entered its second season.
Origins[edit]
The series was created in 2018, beginning as a series of short journal style entries written by Kenneth Vigue, before launching them as his first podcast in 2019.[9] As reported by Vigue in an interview with Forbes[10], an evening of gaming with online friends in Fallout 76 led to a discussion on bullies from high school. After realizing that everyone in the group had known a Chad, Vigue envisioned what would happen when two Vault Dwellers who constantly had conflict within the confines of the Vault, emerged into the Appalachia Wasteland and continued that conflict unabated. The journal stories were written from the first-hand perspective ne'er do well Simon Rex, who chronicles his adventures and frustrations surviving after the Apocalypse. In format each tale begins from an optimistic attempt to find supplies or explore a location and ends with a dark humorous ending to his entry.
After the stories were received positively by the community, Vigue began formatting them into an audio drama. A lifelong fan of old time radio drama such as the Inner Sanctum, Lights Out and The Whistler, Vigue wanted to bridge the gap between the Golden Age of Radio and modern storytelling podcasts by creating cinematic soundscapes with more modern humor and compelling narrative.[9] The first episode with Vigue reading for the character of Simon Rex launched on May 30th, 2019 to positive community reviews. By episode 2, Vigue felt limited from telling larger stories and feared that the audience would eventually tire of him reading audiobook style, so he held an open casting call to bring in a full ensemble cast to fill the roles of new characters. Episode 4 serves as a soft reboot for the show, shifting to a full ensemble cast audio drama story that introduces many of the shows most popular characters, including Chad (Alexander Luthor), Susie and Ella (Jessica Duval, Moose (Clint Winberry), and Patsy (Jessica Dickie).
Season one's plans were altered and postponed after some stories were shelved to prioritize the creation of a live action stage show for Bethesda Game Days 2019[6], with 5 months passing between episode 11 and episode 12, the season one finale.
Reception[edit]
Kotaku wrote of the unique and broad appeal of the show and how, "it bridges the gap between personal gaming experiences and the artistry around a structured narrative."[2] According to Power Up Gaming, "It is equal parts dry comedy, tense post-apocalyptic survival tale and, at times, a reflective mood piece. (It) spins evocative imagery when it’s not being sharply funny. Much of this comes down to the excellent ambient sound work done for each episode but across all elements of production, there is a firm sense of place and texture to the story being told."
Episodes[edit]
The first season of CHAD: A Fallout 76 Podcast premiered May 30, 2019[11]. The last episode, the season one finale, was released June 3, 2020[12]
