CONTINUUS Pharmaceuticals Inc. is an American pharmaceutical company located in Woburn, MA.

CONTINUUS was founded in 2012 by Salvatore Mascia. The company is a spin-out of the Novartis-MIT center for continuous manufacturing. Its core business is enabling end-to-end Integrated Continuous Manufacturing, applying novel technologies to enable continuous production of pharmaceuticals at reduced costs and higher quality.[1]

The company moved to its current Headquarters in Woburn in April 2015.[2]

On-Demand Manufacturing of Pharmaceuticals

CONTINUUS Pharmaceuticals aims to change the manufacturing environment from a batch production, that follows a step-by-step process, to a continuous one that allows continuous-flow manufacturing. The technology developed by the company is focused on the transition from batch to flow of small molecule pharmaceuticals.

Funding

CONTINUUS supported its incorporation with debt financing, for a total of $265,000[3]. The second source of financing was provided by MassChallenge in 2013[4] in the form of a grant (the size of the grant was not disclosed), and the last round was financed by IMA, an Italian company specialized in design and manufacturing, that invested $2,463,659 in the company.

The company has also been funded by the National Science Foundation, that has awarded two grants to Continuus, the first one for $150,000[5] (SBIR Phase I: Novel pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies to deliver more affordable medications to patients faster and with better quality) and the second one for $1,258,000.00[6] (SBIR Phase II: Novel pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies to deliver more affordable medications to patients faster and with better quality).

Continuous manufacturing (CM) can be accomplished in a production area that is about one-tenth the size of a traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing facility—at about 40% of the cost.[7]
