Cabash - (CAB'ASH) The word itself is a combination of the words "cabbage" and "bash". Cabash is a game involving cabbage and usually a bat or stick which is used to hit the Cabbage. Contestants are set up with a bat or stick and a head of cabbage on top of a pole or post. The player strikes that cabbage with the bat. The distance that the core of the cabbage goes is marked on the ground and the next contestant attempts to get farther with a different head of cabbage. The order of players is determined by youngest to oldest. Competing players can stand within 10' and in front of the "basher", with their hands held behind their back they may attempt to block the cabbage with their bodies. The order of players is determined by age, youngest to oldest. The game is played annually around new year. The player who "bashes" their head of cabbage the farthest is declared the winner and earns title Cabbage King until next year when the King can be de-throwned.
Origin of the game is uncertain. Cabbage is one of the oldest vegetables and dates back as far 4000 BC. It has been feeding mankind for thousands of years. Easy to grow and produce yet high on nutrients. It has, however, never been able to escape its personality of being a poor man's food. Cabash is a tradition symbolizing the rejection of the poor life and the postulate of creating a bright and better new year and future. By bashing the cabbage it tells the world that we will not be constrained to the shackles and hardships of today. We "bash" that out of our lifes and move to the new year.
