Plot[edit]
Setting[edit]
The plot begins in 1927 in Vienna, Austria and progresses throughout World War II.
Sypnosis[edit]
The novel is written from the perspective of Johannes, who joins the Hitler Youth in the late 1930s.[1]. He is an Aryan boy who goes against the values of his family. When Johannes later discovers that his parents are hiding a Jewish girl, Elsa, in a false wall, he is furious[2]. However, shortly after Johannes experiences a traumatic event during an enemy raid, he takes an interest in the Jewish girl his parents are hiding[2]. When Johannes' parents go missing, he realizes that he is the only one left responsible for Elsa's survival[1]
