Caleb Maupin (born 1988) is a political activist and commentator known for his support of a social conservative communist ideology, sometimes called "patriotic socialism". (Not to be confused with socialist patriotism.) Maupin previously worked for the Workers World Party, then reported for Russia Today, and then created his own Center for Political Innovation (CPIUSA).

Biography[edit]

While attending college at Baldwin-Wallace College, Maupin joined the Workers World Party (WWP) and its youth wing, Fight Imperialism Stand Together (FIST).[1][2][3]

In 2011, Maupin participated in the Occupy Wall Street movement as a member of the WWP-led International Action Center.[4][5] In 2013, Maupin helped organize an International Action Center protest against US intervention in the Syrian civil war.[6]

In 2018, Maupin spoke at National Bolshevik Aleksandr Dugin's "Anti-Globalization Conference",[2][7] where Maupin praised Dugin's writings.[2] In 2022, Maupin spoke to the Schiller Institute to praise Lyndon LaRouche's writings.[8]

Russia Today[edit]

In 2013, Maupin became a part-time reporter for Russia Today (RT) in America,[5][9][10] a Russian state-controlled news network.[5]

In 2021, the Ukrainian government included Maupin in the list of Americans who it considers Russian propagandists.[11][12]

In March 2022, RT America closed and most of its staff ceased to work for the outlet.[13]

In 2024, Maupin chaired the US delegation to the World Festival of Youth in Sirius, Russia,[14] where he spoke with Vladimir Putin.[15]

Center for Political Innovation[edit]

In 2020, Maupin founded the Center for Political Innovation (CPIUSA), a think tank which promotes "American socialism".[11] CPIUSA is not affiliated with the similarly-abbreviated the Communist Party USA (CPUSA).[2][11]

In 2022, Maupin and CPIUSA held a conference supporting Vladimir Putin and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[11][9] A video of event leaders raising the Soviet flag and American flag together became a viral video.[11][16]

In August 2022, Maupin was accused by CPIUSA members of sexual coercion.[9] CPIUSA "unconditionally expelled" Maupin after allegations of "abusive and inappropriate sexual behavior",[17][9] then "unanimously voted to dissolve the organization".[18] In November 2022, Maupin restarted CPIUSA.[19][better source needed]

In 2023, CPIUSA was one of the organizers of the "Rage Against the War Machine" event,[20][21] which sought to "bring together" the "left and the right" to oppose war[22] and which featured several LaRouche movement speakers, including former "MAGA communist" Jackson Hinkle.[23] CPIUSA members wore Russian Z's and waved Russian flags.[20]

In 2023, CPIUSA joined the World Anti-Imperialist Platform.[24]

Speakers at CPIUSA events include Jackson Hinkle,[25] Tara Reade,[9][11][7] and Kalambayi Andenet of the African People's Socialist Party.[9]
