Since a young age, he has been taking photographs to document his experiences and capture the moment.[1] Though his catalog primarily consists of landscapes, he shoots a wide variety of genres and has an established style of editing. Smolenaars uses Nikon camera products.
His work has been featured by several North American organizations including The Weather Network, Global Affairs Canada, Polaroid, CBC Toronto, Tourism PEI, Tourism Burlington, and Urbanicity.[1]
Activism[edit]
Education Cuts[edit]
In September 2018, Caleb Smolenaars took part in an Ontario wide walkout against health curriculum changes made by the Ontario Doug Ford government. Smolenaars organized for Nelson High School, which he attended at the time.[2]
In April 2019, Caleb Smolenaars co-founded a movement called Students Say No. Students Say No lead over 100,000 Ontario secondary school students out of school in protest of the Doug Ford government's cuts to education. In an interview for local news station Inside Halton, Smolenaars spoke about students taking action and standing together.[3] The walkouts took place on April 4th, 2019 and gained national media attention as students rallied for fair education funding.[4]
In May 2019, Smolenaars worked with the Students Say No team to organize sit-ins at Ontario MPP offices. Caleb Smolenaars visited his local MPP, Effie Triantafilopoulos, but was met with a locked door and a sign according to an interview with CBC Hamilton.[5] This prompted further investigation by CBC into constituent accessibility to MPPs.
In February 2021, Smolenaars, among other students, allegedly had critical comments scrubbed from Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce's Instagram posts.[6] He participated in multiple interviews with Global News and many supporters took to Twitter to call for Stephen Lecce's resignation.
Climate Change[edit]
In Autumn 2019, Smolenaars took part in organizing climate protests outside of City Hall in Burlington, Ontario as part of the international movement School Strike For Climate.[7] Smolenaars created the Instagram page Students For Change Halton to promote the strikes and spread the word among students in the area. The strikes had an average attendance of 100 people and speeches were made by local politicians Pam Damoff and Marianne Meed Ward.
Social Media Activism[edit]
In a presentation to the Oakville District Labour Council in which Smolenaars spoke of his activism, he emphasized the importance of social media for raising awareness and gaining publicity[8]. Smolenaars has been recognized in hosting multiple social media pages for movements including Students Say No and Students For Change Halton.
