The California Institute for Human Science (CIHS) is a private, non-profit graduate university located in Encinitas, California. Founded in 1992 by Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama, the institution offers graduate programs in psychology, integral health, and integral noetic sciences that bridge scientific inquiry with spiritual traditions.[1]

History

CIHS was established in 1992 by Hiroshi Motoyama (1925–2015), a Japanese scientist, Shinto priest, and parapsychologist.[2] Dr. Motoyama founded the institute with the mission of creating an integrative worldview wherein insights derived from religion, spirituality, and science could be harmonized and unified. His vision was to provide leadership through cutting-edge scientific research and innovative programs of higher education aimed at reconciling science and spirituality.

The institution underwent significant development in the late 1990s under the leadership of physicist Thomas G. Brophy, who joined as Dean of Administration in 1997. Under his guidance, CIHS began exploring regional accreditation.[3] Dr. Brophy later became President of CIHS in 2019 and oversaw the institution's successful achievement of regional accreditation in 2021 from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).[4]
