Calling (LDS Church)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A Calling in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a job or area of responsibility held by a member of the Church. Generally, every active member has a calling with a varying level of responsibility, authority, and tenure.[1]

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not have a paid clergy and every calling is done so on a volunteer basis without pay, with the exception of those called to be general authorities, the highest ranking callings in the Church, who retire from their temporal jobs and are given a modest living allowance.[2]

Prior to beginning service, a person is presented to church membership for a sustaining vote to that calling, either on a congregational, regional, or churchwide vote, depending on calling.[3] The person is then set apart to serve in the calling by the laying on of hands.[4]
