Callum is a fictional character in the American–Canadian fantasy computer-animated web television series The Dragon Prince, which has been aired on Netflix since 2018. The character was created by the show's co-creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, and is voiced by Jack DeSena.

Callum is introduced as the 14-year-old prince of Katolis, and the stepson to King Harrow. During an assassination mission on the king's life, he and his half-brother Ezran end up running in to one of the assassins, Rayla, and side with her in order to deliver the Dragon Prince back to his mother in the magical lands of Xadia. While travelling to the Dragon Queen, Callum discovers his potential for learning magic.

Storylines[edit]

Background[edit]

Callum was born on the 15th of July to Sarai and an unknown father.[1] Callum's father passes away for unknown reasons, and Sarai marries the future king of Katolis, Harrow. However, when Callum was a young child, Sarai was killed by the Dragon King Avizandum. [2] As a result, Callum grew up with his stepfather, Harrow, with whom he had an awkward relationship with. Callum was brought up as a prince, learning various subjects like sword-fighting, history, archery, battle tactics, horseback-riding, and leadership, but struggled with all of them.[3]

However, Callum does have an affinity and true talent for art. In particular, once he’s seen something, he can draw it almost perfectly from memory, down to every detail. This turned out to be critical for learning magic, and allows him to quickly pick up spells he's seen.[3]

Book 1: Moon (2018)[edit]

Callum spends his days in Katolis--his stepfather's kingdom--either working on his art or being trained in various subjects. During one such day, he he is scheduled to practice sword fighting in the courtyard with his tutor Soren, the captain of the Crownguard who protect King Harrow. As the two spar, it becomes apparent that Callum lacks proper experience with swords as compared to Soren, though shows some promise when he noticed that his crush, Claudia (Soren's sister) had entered the courtyard. The king's advisor, Opeli, informs Callum that his stepfather wishes to speak with him in the throne room. King Harrow tells Callum and his brother, Ezran, that they are being sent away to the kingdom's winter lodge, which raises suspicion among both brothers. Later, when Callum overhears that Moonshadow assassins are coming for Harrow, he decides to join Soren's search party to fight the elves, but is turned away due to his age and lack of proper experience. Frustrated, Callum takes out his anger at Ezran by informing him that assassins are coming for their father, prompting Ezran to run away.[4]

Callum eventually runs into Rayla, who had snuck into the castle looking for one of the two targets, Ezran. To protect his younger brother, Callum lies that he is Ezran, but his deception is soon revealed when Ezran shows up. The two princes are chased and cornered by Rayla in the high mage Viren's secret underground room, where the three discovered that he had has hidden the egg of the Dragon Prince.[5] The three are then confronted by Viren's daughter, Claudia, and while escaping with the dragon egg, Callum steals Claudia's Primal Stone and discovers he has an affinity for magic when he casts a spell he saw Claudia once perform. When offering the dragon egg fails to placate the leader of the assassins, Callum goes to find Harrow, only to get intercepted by Viren. When Callum reveals that he knows about the egg, Viren has him arrested but is interrupted when the assassins arrive. During the battle, Callum makes a split decision to rejoin with Rayla and Ezran and have the three of them return the dragon egg to Xadia themselves. [6]

The next morning, Rayla educates Callum about primal magic and the Primal Stone, informing him that the stone provides him with the magical energy needed for spells. While teaching him about the six different Primal Sources, Callum notices that the symbols she drew match the symbols he once saw on a cube at the winter lodge. Callum convinces Ezran and a reluctant Rayla to make a detour at the winter lodge where she can retrieve the cube for him. However, while Rayla is inside the lodge, the princes' aunt, General Amaya, arrives with a company of soldiers. After Rayla finds the cube, Amaya captures and interrogates the elf. Callum, Ezran and Bait rescue Rayla, but are soon cornered by Amaya and her soldiers. Desperate, Callum lies that Rayla wants to kill him and Ezran, hurting the elf's feelings. Rayla pretends to hold Callum and Ezran hostage in order to escape.[7]

While he's able to get Rayla to open up[8] ,Callum picks up on her unwillingness to be forthright and honest, leading to distrust between the two. While travelling up a mountain, this distrust escalates into an argument that triggers an avalanche that pushes both the egg and Ezran onto an unstable frozen lake. While going to retrieve the egg and rescue his brother, Callum shows his willingness to trust Rayla and tries to hand the egg to her. Rayla reveals the true nature of her wrist ribbon--that it will keep growing tighter until it cuts off her arm or if Ezran dies--but before she can reveal Harrow's death, Callum desperately shoves the Dragon egg into Rayla's hands, causing her to drop it due to her injured hand. Ezran rescues the egg, but the freezing water leaves it severely weakened and on the verge of death.[9] Later, the group travels into a human town, where Callum and Ezran learn that a mysterious healer lives on a mountain called the "Cursed Caldera" who can possibly heal the dragon egg.[10] During the trip up the mountain, Callum confides that he feels useless and insecure without the Primal Stone, yet nevertheless organizes a plan of attack to take down a giant leech.[11] When the group arrives at the top of the mountain, they discover that the "healer" was actually a Moon mage, which Rayla says is an "illusionist" who is incapable of actually healing the dragon egg. The Moon mage, Lujanne, informs the group that the only way to save the egg would be to hatch it immediately, though this is only possible in the eye of a storm.[12] Callum, remembering Claudia telling him that the Primal Stone is essentially an orb containing a storm, destroys it to unleash the storm inside. This manages to hatch the egg of the Dragon Prince, who is dubbed Azymondias (and who the group nicknames "Zym").[12]

Book 2: Sky (2019)[edit]

Callum convinces the group to stay on the Cursed Caldera for a few days so that he can learn magic from Lujanne. He learns that the caldera is actually the "Moon Nexus," a site where Moon magic is at its strongest. However, when Callum asks her to teach him magic, she brusquely informs him that humans can't learn primal magic because they weren't born connected to a Primal Source, and that without a Primal Stone, he wouldn't ever be able to learn magic She tells Callum that this magical connection comes from an "Arcanum," a deep understanding of the Primal Source. [13]. After Rayla is found and attacked by Soren and Claudia, Callum stops the fight and convinces the trio to lay down their weapons.[14].
