Camp Sternberg is a Jewish all-girls summer camp located in the Catskill Mountains of New York, United States. The camp, serving the Orthodox Jewish community, focuses on providing a positive, safe, and spiritual environment for girls to explore their Jewish identity, cultivate new skills, and build lifelong friendships.[1]
History
Camp Sternberg was founded by Rabbi Ronnie Greenwald in 1965. In 2010, the Jewish Federation stopped funding Camp Sternberg. The camp was due to shut down, but instead was purchased by Dov and Allyson Perkal. Since then, the camp has been improved in various areas and returned to its booming state.
Location and Facilities
Camp Sternberg is set in the heart of the Catskill Mountains in the town of Narrowsburg and includes a private lake, pool, bunkhouses, recreational facilities, a dining hall, and multiple sports fields. The camp also boasts facilities for outdoor activities, arts and crafts, pioneer activities, and much more.[2]
Activities and Programs
The camp offers a variety of programs that are focused around Jewish life and learning, including Torah study, prayer services, and Jewish-themed programming. Additionally, campers enjoy a diverse set of recreational activities such as sports, arts, and outdoor adventure. Ronnie Greenwald's Legacy
Rabbi Ronnie Greenwald passed away in 2016, leaving behind a substantial legacy in Jewish education and community development. As the founder of Camp Sternberg, Rabbi Greenwald's vision of a safe and positive space for young girls to explore their Jewish identity continues to influence the camp's mission and values.[4]
Upon his passing, the leadership of the camp continued under Dov and Allyson Perkal, who have maintained and furthered Rabbi Greenwald's vision. Their dedication ensures that Camp Sternberg continues to thrive as a vibrant community that enriches the lives of its campers.
