The Tlemcen campaign of 1679 was a military operation conducted by the Cherifian Empire, led by Ismaïl ben Chérif against the Regency of Algiers, under the dey Mohamed Trîk.
Background[edit]
In 1679, Ismaïl advances towards Tlemcen, following the Sahara route. He is joined by nomadic Arab tribes such as Segouna, Doui Menia, Dekhiça, Hamian, Amour, as well as the Ouled Djerir and Beni Amer. Ismaïl proceeds to the Djebel Amour.[1][2]
Battle[edit]
Ismaïl Ben Chérif's army arrives at a location called Elgouia on the Chélif, where they encounter the Algerian column, equipped with cannons and howitzers, stationed on the riverbank. As night falls, the Algerians open fire with cannons and howitzers; simultaneously, they beat their drums and light torches. Hearing this noise, the terrified Arabs flee. The sultan finds himself abandoned by his allies.[1][2][3]
Aftermath[edit]
A delegation is sent across the river, reminding Ismaïl ben Chérif of the respect for the Oued Moulouya boundary. Mouley Ismaïl accepts the reminder and retreats.[3][2]
