The campaigns of Moulay Ismail were a series of military operations of the Moroccan sultan Ismail Ibn Sharif during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The sultan of Morocco built up a powerful army, made up largely of black slaves who were totally devoted to him, allowing the central government to be less dependent on the often rebellious tribes. Moulay Ismail managed to fight against the Ottomans in Algiers and took important coastal places from the Europeans: he captured the cities of La Mamora on the 30th of April 1681, Larache in 1689 and Asilah in 1691 from Spain. Also, he was successful in seizing the city of Tangier on the 6th of February 1684 from England. Moulay Ismail captured thousands of Christian prisoners and came very close to seizing Ceuta in a thirty-year siege.
Although the monarch enjoyed internal stability in his empire, during his reign there were a series of rebellions that were put down in favor of the sultan.
