Can We All Get Along?: The Segregation of John Muir High School is a 2022 American documentary film directed by Pablo Miralles (Gringos At the Gate) and produced by Arroyo Seco Films.[1]
The film will have its world premiere on PBS So Cal and KCET in September of 2022.[2][3]
Synopsis[edit]
Filmmaker Pablo Miralles attends his 30th high school reunion only to find that the once integrated John Muir High School is now deeply segregated. Through interviews with with alumni, administrators, and civic leaders including former Pasadena mayor Bill Boggard, former superintendent Ramon Cortines, filmmaker and John Muir High School alumna Renee Tajima-Pena, and others, Miralles recounts the history of desegregation in the Pasadena Unified School District.
The film takes a personal look into past political and social decisions such as Proposition 13, Spangler Versus the Pasadena Board of Education[4][5], and school choice that still reverberate in California's public schools. The filmmakers own uncertainty about sending his son to Muir High School is examined through this historical context.
Release[edit]
Originally released in 2019 as a short documentary, it will be rereleased as a 57 minute film in September of 2022,[6] when it will have its world premiere on PBS SoCal and KCET Los Angeles.
