Canary Media is an independent, non-profit journalism entity chronicling the transition to a decarbonized economy and society, with a focus on the transformation of the primary energy, transportation, industrial, and building sectors.[1] Its coverage is divided into:
- Renewable generation, grid modernization, electrification
- Decarbonization of transportation
- Decarbonization of buildings
- Decarbonization of heavy industry
- Financial, regulatory, and social energy processes
It aims to discover, reveal, and explain vital developments determining the course of the world's multi-trillion-dollar shift to a decarbonized economy and society.
History
Canary Media was founded in 2021 by RMI CEO Jules Kortenhorst, Eric Wesoff, and Nicholas Rinaldi, with the intent of covering the technological, economic, policy and social justice issues driving the shift towards a decarbonized economy.[2]
Canary Media's founding Editor-in-Chief is Jeff St. John. The newsroom publishes journalistic and opinion pieces on its own website and also a daily newsletter authored by Julian Spector.
David Roberts, formerly of Grist and Vox, is an Editor-at-Large, contributing columns on energy policy, politics, technologies, and markets.
Organization and funding
As of August 2021, Canary Media has a staff of 13, comprised of many former veterans of Greentech Media who have since transitioned to work at Canary[3]. Eric Wesoff, the Managing Editor of Canary Media, has been recognized by the Text100 Digital Index as the most influential U.S. energy reporter.[4]
Canary Media is funded by RMI, an independent nonprofit founded in 1982 that serves as a leading source of expertise and analysis on the technological, economic and policy challenges to making the transition to a clean, prosperous and secure zero-carbon future.[5]
Canary Media retains editorial independence from RMI in their approach to uncovering and publicizing the activities of institutions and individuals acting knowingly and unknowingly in ways that may hamper or misdirect efforts to achieve an equitable and optimal path to decarbonization.
