Cancel Culture

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Cancel Culture is a reference to a cultural and collective social activism and type of boycott and Online Shaming that pressured corporations, mostly in the entertainment industry, to conform to a certain set of values that were deemed politically left-wing. In most cases, cancel culture activists would be focused on trying to reduce offensive terminology, slurs, hate speech, and derogatory viewpoints about minority groups in the West.

Dave Chappelle, a comedian, famously opposed cancel culture by specifically ridiculing it in his Grammy Award winning Netflix comedy special Sticks & Stones.[1]

Certain news outlets were encouraging this type of cultural boycotting through their opinion sections. In some cases, writing detailed articles on sexual harassment or other offensive behavior of very successful comedians such as Louis C.K.. The #MeToo movement was also using it as a way to cancel certain shows that it deemed were beneficial to those who were accused of sexual crimes or other misogynistic offenses.[2]
