Candace Marie Wakefield (SupaStarC) is a singer, songwriter and vocalist born and raised in Inglewood, California.
In April of 2018, she released her highly anticipated debut R&B/Pop album “1993 Camaro (The Journey)...[1]” which she wrote and recorded in her 1993 Camaro. 1993 Camaro (The Journey) takes us on her journey through the ups and downs of her uphill climb to success. The message is equally as impactful with uplifting lyrics that inspire dreamers to never give up.
Life and career
Early on, Candace found a passion for singing and writing songs by watching and listening to her grandmother, Dr. Margaret Jenkins (her maternal grandmother was a gospel singer/composer who sang with gospel group “Ladies of Song[2]”). Jenkins sang and composed “The Only Hope We Have,” a song that Gospel Legend Mahalia Jackson loved so much, she recorded and released 3 different arrangements.[3]) and her mother Marie Wakefield[4]. They are big influences in her career. Her mother and grandmother traveled the world, writing and composing songs that would touch the lives of many. Candace began singing solos in church and school. She attended her grandmother’s school where her mother, aunt, brother and sister worked. “Celeste Scott Christian School[5]” was named after her grandmother’s sister and she attended from pre-k to 7th grade. She was so shy that she would turn her back to the audience and sing for everyone. From plays to lead singing roles, Candace knew this was her passion.[6] Growing up in a household of 3 boys and 3 girls, Candace being the youngest of all, there was plenty of singing involved[7], like the Brady bunch. They were the “Wakefield bunch,” full of brothers and sisters who could all sing the house down[8].
Candace would sit and make up melodies on the piano that would one day turn into amazing records. “Pay Off[9]” being one of the songs she created piano chords to as a child, and turned it into a full, beautiful record in her later years[10].
She started as a gospel artist, singing at local churches around LA county[11], sharing her gift for God through music. Composing songs from scratch and having her friends sing and play with her at shows[12].
In 2004 Candace was offered to sing background for Omarion and Marques Houston, this is when her professional background career started.
From then on she went on singing[13] and working for so many other amazing artists[14], sharing the stage and mic with legends who all believe in her gift[15].
In 2015, Candace signed a publishing deal with Nottinghill Music[16].
Candace has worked with multiple artists who helped pave the way towards her success. Candace wrote and sang background on History, Believer, Free and Holy Ghost featured on Fantasia’s album, “Sketchbook”.[17] She toured internationally as a vocalist for Nicki Minaj, Ciara and Kelly Price. Candace toured Japan with Japanese-American singer and songwriter Ai, as a bi-lingual background vocalist. She earned accolades for her vocals on Kendrick Lamar’s hit singles “Alright” and “I "[18] from his 5X Grammy winning album To Pimp a Butterfly.
She has also worked as a vocalist for T.I., JLo, Keyshia Cole, Babyface, K. Michelle, Chante' Moore and many more.
Candace co-wrote “Start A Fire,” “American Gold,” “Perfect Girls,” and “No Introduction” on TLC’s self- titled finale album “TLC” released in 2017 – the album was certified #1 by Billboard, independent charts. She also co-wrote “Tryna Get By” and “Body Language” on Faith Evans and Notorious BIG Collaboration Album, “The King and I”[19], “Afterparty”, “Pretty Girl” and “Gone” by actress/singer Rhyon Brown, Shanice’s come back single “He Won’t” and Top 40 hit single “Just my Type[20]” by Tiana.
She has worked with Nickelodeon show Little Baller's Indiana where she wrote 4 songs – including theme song “Teamwork” with legendary rapper MC Lyte. She performed at Angela Basset’s 60th birthday party and continues to perform locally[21], nationally[22], and internationally[23].
As she continues to contribute her talents to notable artists around the world, Candace is also sharing her gift as an artist as well.[24]
