Cannery District is an open air Lifestyle center located in Bozeman, Montana, United States that opened in 2012. The property is managed by Cannery District Partners.[1] and features an eclectic mix of local retailers, restaurants, and small business[2]. The Cannery is located 1.5 miles from Bozeman’s Main Street, en route to Bridger Bowl Ski Area.
History[edit]
Before being transformed into a Lifestyle Center, the site was used as a canning facility for approximately 50 years. In 1917 The Bozeman Canning Company opened a facility on the property to can beans, carrots, peas and even meat during the Great Depression. During the height of the facility, it produced 13,000 cases of peas per day. The Cannery was open 15-20 hours a day during peak harvest, employing 250-275 people. In 1950 the plant was closed and later sold to local businessmen. They re-started under the name Bozeman Canning Company which lasted until 1961[3]
Today[edit]
In 2008 the first of three buildings on the corner of Oak and Rouse were renovated and their uses re-purposed to adapt to Bozeman’s changing and growing economy. The buildings and their new uses have quickly become an integral part of Bozeman’s community fabric and a critical gateway into town. The Cannery District is anchored by a four-story Cannery Building and several surrounding buildings. In 2020 the Cannery added 52 residential apartment units. The last and final building is expected to be complete in 2021.
