Captain's chair
A captain's chair is an armchair, usually made of wood, constructed very much like a Windsor chair with a low curved back and a saddle seat into which are inserted the vertical spindles. The chair back curves around and extends forward, forming arm rests. Captain's chairs are generally of more ample and imposing dimensions than normal Winsdor chairs, and may have normal legs or a swivel mechanism, the latter usually on casters. Padded leather backs and seats are reasonably common, and versions can be found covered entirely in leather.
Their name indicates their supposed origin in the nineteenth century on board ships, and their use by higher-ranking officers, though they are most often used as desk chairs.
