Car-jitsu

Car-jitsu is a combat sport, invented in Russia by Vik Mikheev, that is held within the confined space of a car. Mikheev came up with this idea during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 when he was looking for a way to practice and study Jiu-Jitsu in a confined space. The sport started in one of Mikheev’s old cars, but the sport has since evolved.

Competitions take place in a staged area in a convertible car, allowing spectators a better view of the action. Competitors can opt to wear a Gi or not and may use whatever is available in the car, whether it be a seatbelt, mirror, or a steering wheel. Competitions consist of two three-minute rounds of combat with two referees ensuring the rules of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are being followed. Like in BJJ, striking and hitting are not allowed. However, points are awarded for positional dominance. The goal is to submit your opponent, with four points awarded for each mount and back control and two points for knee and belly submissions. Competitors switch front seats at the beginning of each round, and if the battle goes into overtime, that competition takes place in the backseat of the vehicle for one last four-minute round.

While this sport can become costly due to the destruction that often happens to the automobile used, many people argue that it is in fact an important skill to be able to protect oneself in a small and perhaps unexpected space. In the world of self-defense, this sport seems to make sense. In any case, the popularity of car jitsu continues to rise in Russia.
