CARACAT (CAT BREED)

Caracat (Caracat — lat. Caracal and Cat). Home cat and a caracal hybrid[edit]

History[edit]

Russia[edit]

Name of the caracat experimental breed comes from the ancestral origin, as this is a hybrid cat resulting from the crossbreeding of a wild Caracal cat and a home cat. In 1998 Der Zoolisgische Garten reported that a female cat of an unidentified breed entered the cage of a male Caracal at the Moscow Zoo (“Ein Bastard von Karakal Hauskatze im Moskauer Zoo” in Der Zoologische Garten Vol. 68, No. 4 (1998)). Soon it gave birth to her only kitten with tufts on the ears and an unusual color that was close to the Caracal color.

USA[edit]

The second fact of the Caracat birth approximately dates back to 2005, when the breeder Joy Geisinger (USA), made a planned crossing of the home cat of Abyssinian breed and a Caracal and they gave birth to the kittens of the first generation.[1] (F1). The work of J. Geisinger was recognized by the international felinological system TICA[2] (The International Cat Association, USA), thanks to her mentor on the programme of the breed and the publication of its report on the program (2007). The breeding programme has been stopped because of the breeder's death. There is also information that Allison Navarro (USA) contributed to the replenishment of the caracat hybrid population of first and second generations: for some time (from 2007 to 2014), the breeder shared photos and videos of beautiful F1 and F2 hybrids (both kittens and adult specimen) on the official page of the nursery (Facebook official public page: Caracats and Savannah Cats of Jewels of the Nile)[3] According to the information provided on the Facebook page of the company and breeder’s personal page[4] kittens were received from a pair of a male caracal and a female Abyssinian cat (including the second generation).[5] In April 2011, she received the second-generation offspring (F2). For unknown reasons, further work of Allison Navarro on the development of the caracat experimental breed was interrupted. Received caracat kittens Allison Navarro still bring joy to the owners.[6]

Russia[edit]

In 2014, work on the development of the Caracat breed continued in Russia. The first after USA breedrs contribution healthy F1 generation was received by felinologist Irina Nazarova (Kataleya) as a result of planned mating of purebred domestic cat and the Caracal sire, carried out by the breeder. Later in the process, several litters were obtained in the second generation (F2) and third generation (F3).[7]

To the date of August 2018 felinologist I. Nazarova made the greatest and undeniable contribution to the development of the Caracat breed, since the total number of adult has at least 86 (feighty six) individuals of both sexes (male and female) and F1-F3 generations.[8]

It should be noted that Caracat is an extremely difficult displayed breed. To date, Caracat received the status of an experimental breed, according to TICA official response to the request for registration of a new Caracat breed.[9]

Ukraine[edit]

Significant results in breeding the first generation caracats (caracat F1) were achieved by Kuzmina Anna (Vipleo), the breeder from Ukraine (Kyiv),[10] EU-certified specialist in care and breeding of feline (small cats). Since 2010, Anna has been successfully working on breeding servals and caracals. During these years, a huge number of graduates, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the VIPLEO nursery live all over the world. In 2014, after several years of studying hybridization, she started working on F1 caracat hybrids, savannahs, and chausies. The best pair of caracals was selected to get a male caracal. In spring 2015, excellent offspring were obtained. For the development of the “Experimental Caracat Program”, one caracal male was left to live with two female cats (the Serengeti and the Abyssinian). The aim of the program was to receive kittens from two different female cats. In spring 2016, the first offspring of caracat F1 was received from the Caracal male cat and the Serengeti female cat. The female kittens from this couple have all the necessary documents of origin for the state department CITES.[11] They are also registered and participate in the program “Experimental Caracat Program” in The International Cat Association TICA.[12] From 2018, it is planned to receive caracat kittens F2 from these female cats. As a result of practical observations, it turned out that the Caracal male cat does not want to mate with the second Abyssinian female cat. Therefore, in 2016, five more female cats of different breeds and a mixture of breeds were acquired and bred. As a result, in 2017, a one-year-old chausie female cat became pregnant and gave birth to 5 wonderful kittens. In spring 2018, three more caracat F1 offspring were born in the cattery from different cats. At the moment (April 2019), thanks to the work of Anna Kuzmina, more than 40 caracat kittens F1-F2 have already been received in Ukraine.[13]

Appearance[edit]

In general the Caracat appearance dominated by the features of the Caracal: very large body type for a domestic cat, thick legs, face markings similar to the Caracal (black bezel nasolabial triangle, the shape of the eyes, and definitely a pronounced brush of black color on the ears. The coat is very original and attractive, rich, and today it is most frequently found in two basic types: "flame wild" and "irbis silver" (reminiscent of Irbis wild cat color).[14]

Body: medium length, flexible and strong, well muscled, however, manifested not so obviously, what keeps the balance in the proportions of the body. Long, slender legs give a special grace. Caraquet is standing on toes. Tail thick, medium length, with smooth color without rings and spots (the tip of the tail black). Head: wedge-shaped with smooth transitions and no sharp lines, pronounced forehead and a wide nose filled with dark trim. Large wide ears, as if in alert, pronounced tassels on the ends and so-called brush inside the ear. Muzzle: rounded shape, with a broad, harmonious chin, large almond-shaped eyes with characteristic brilliance and a calm expression, with dark trim. Eye color gold (closer to amber, basically they have caracity silver color) or green. Coat: distinctive feature - smooth, soft, without the typical cat smell. There is a ticking (triple color of each hair). The coat color is found in two types - wild (tone, close to red-brown), chocolate (chocolate tone on a red background), "cinnamon" (red-brown colors on orange background), "silver" (all the previously mentioned colors in different variations on a silver background). Size and weight: body length can reach 60 cm from nose to tip of tail - 100 cm, height at the withers is approximately 45-50 cm, body mass up to 15 kg.[15]

Foundation[edit]

An integral part of the hybrid cat concept is the so-called "foundation", denoted prefix F1, F2 and beyond.

Generation (foundation) of a hybrid (including Caracat) - means the "turn" of the birth of this individual in relation to the wild ancestor (it’s Caracal to Caracat). The essence of the generation concept is the ratio in the kitten (%) of the wild cat blood and the domestic cat blood. For example, the first generation offspring - F1 (F1) - has about 50% of the blood of a wild cat (Caracal - in the case of a Caracat) and 50% of the blood of a domesticated cat. The next one -  generation of F2 (F2) - occurs as a kitten being given birth by the first generation individual, and this offspring already has 25% of the wild cat's blood. The larger the value of the generation index (figures after the letter F (F)), the less wild blood this offspring brings and the more it resembles domestic cat in their appearance and size.

The concept of hybrid’s generation (including Caracat) is especially important for work on the development of breed: first, to obtain purebred Caracat (100% Caracat blood) and to obtain a fetal male of this hybrid, since up to the fourth generation (F4) males are considered to be infertile. Therefore, the females possess special value in the breeding of hybrids, thanks to which the work on the development of the breed is possible. Hybrid generation is also significant for sales purposes: as the home maintenance of a wild cat is difficult breeders tend to create a cat looking similar to a wildlife representative as much as possible but with a home-like "safe" character. The F1 hybrid caracal and domestic cat – caracat F1 - is the most difficult to be deduced: in wildlife the Сaracal sire (male) ignores representatives of another species in breeding issues. But the result of the breeder successful work at the selection of a pair for Caracal sire exceeds all expectations: F1 has a manifesting "wild" look. The Caracat breeders and owners mention that having even 50% of wild blood the caracat has a gentle, calm temper, they are easily amenable to education, and do no harm to their owners, their family members, or domestic pets living together with them. The owners of the Caracat also note the interesting fact that large dogs living together with the F1 Caracat do not perceive it as a cat: their mutual relations are formed as if both individuals are representatives of the same species. To date, stable results in the hybrid experimental breed of Caracat were obtained from the first and second generations (in the mentioned above kennel Kataleya).[16]

Character[edit]

According to breeders and owners of the Caracat, this hybrid cat is affectionate and has a friendly disposition, special devotion to his master curiously. They have a lively temperament, consistently balanced emotional state. Sympathetic in the life of the owner, happy to accompany him in any home (and not only) matters. Responsive and capable of training a variety of games, rather to the dogs (like a thrown ball). Unlike the Caracal, as claimed by the owners, not prone to damage furniture and other possessions in the house, so does not require the maintenance in the enclosure. Organized and neat in your cat's life: strictly comply with the rules of the toilet and with proper education of the owner does not violate other rules of conduct in the house (especially related to food).[17]

Health[edit]

From Caracal the Caracat inherited enough good health. Caracat has a well developed digestive system capable of digesting raw meat with bones and to go without water for up to 5 days (despite this, it is not recommended to deprive animals of fresh water! Water for any domestic cat needs to be in constant access, while fresh and clean). Also breeders of Caracat argue that this hybrid cat has very strong bones and a strong immune system.[18]

Keeping[edit]

Breeders recommend to purchase a Caracat kitten when he reaches the age of three months. To the specified age the kitten is usually translated into natural feeding raw meat, accustomed to the tray and adapted to society. Breeders recommend to future owners to prepare the havitat for a small Caracat kitten in advance: make sure you need a special "sports" complex consisting of two or three levels of height, where the couches, the hammocks, houses, scratching posts and other attributes are placed. Caracats are very active cats that love to dwell on higher points of their home than the standard levels like floor, sofa, chair. Feeding of Caracat is an important area of responsibility of the owner, as the digestive system of the Caracat is more adapted to the diet that is raw meat or fish (except pork, which is contraindicated for eating karaketov because of the risk of transmission of viral diseases). Grooming of the Caracat is simple, but needs to be regular in terms of combing wool at least once a week and more often in the shedding period. Caracat loves water treatments, and therefore its presence in the Caracat life is possible, but not more often than once in three months for the juveniles. As they grow older water procedures are possible (after a walk, etc.)[19]

Caracat and Society[edit]

The first Russian hybrid cat Caracat was officially presented to the public by the felinologist Irina Nazarova at the exhibition "Infocat"[20] in 2015. It is noteworthy that the famous French judge competitions and exhibitions cat Pascal Remy[21] singled out the Caracat during the event and was surprised by an unusual new hybrid cat. In August 2016 in Krasnodar the first international exhibition of hybrid breeds cats[22] took place, where the official Caracat kennel Kataleya also presented its best graduates. Caracat was first at the international exhibition Кашемир-2018, Uzbekistan, Tashkent, was presented by the felinologist Anna Kuzmina.[23]The same caracat was presented at the exhibition of cats in Poltava (Vipleo).[24]

information on the Caracat can mostly be found on the Russian and Ukrainian media (main[25] [26] and local[27] [28] TV-channels, magazines) because the contribution to the breed development is being carried out to date only in Russia and in Ukraine by felinologists Irina Nazarova, Anna Kuzmina and their colleagues (the caracat breeders working at hte caracat programme with the caracats females got from the Nazarova I. official cattery "Kataleya" and Kuzmina A. official cattery "Vipleo" ).[29] [30]
