Carchuna

Carchuna is a Spanish locality of the autonomous local entity of Carchuna-Calahonda, in the municipality of Motril, located in the central part of the Costa Granadina (province of Granada), in Andalusia. This locality also includes the towns of La Perla and La Chucha, and is situated between Calahonda and Torrenueva Costa.

Carchuna is located to the southeast of the urban nucleus of Motril and Torrenueva Costa, in the area known as Los Llanos de Carchuna. It is bordered to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, to the north by the Conjuro mountain range, to the west by Cape Sacratif and to the east by Calahonda, as far as Farillo de Carchuna.

History

This town has its origin with the settlement in Los Llanos, where small farmers were forming the population nucleus around the agricultural warehouse built by Florentino Vázquez and his wife Marina Cortés de la Torre in 1953. The first inhabitants came from various towns in the Alpujarra such as Torvizcón or Rubite. The final take-off came with the construction of housing by the institute for Agrarian Reform and Development. Immigration has also made this town grow in recent years, where the population already exceeds 2000 people.

In 1974 it was completed by the I.R.Y.D.A.(Institute for Agrarian Reform and Development) is a village of the so-called colonization, which is located just next to the old town, built with few means by the farmers themselves who were setting in the plain, so that the influx of population grows dramatically.

Economy

Agriculture marks the pace of economic growth of this people and has its turning point in the development of intensive agriculture under plastic. Greenhouses change the landscape but also the Carchuna economy revolves mainly around these farms. However, Carchuna also has a strong tourist attraction that focuses on the beaches and where different businesses and campsites offer an interesting proposal for visitors.

Culture

Monuments - Carchuna Castle.

It was built around 183 by order of King Charles III as a defensive fortification against pirate raids. It is a square-shape building and is an exemplary work of 18th century military engineering. This castle was also the protagonist of an important chapter in the history of the Spanish Civil War, when on 23 May 1938, there was a rescue of republican prisoners, mostly Asturians.
