Carey Robin Unger (March 8, 1980) was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He grew up in a musical family and at the age of nine, his parents put him in the Calgary Boys' Choir under the direction of Douglas Parnham despite his desire to be enrolled in sports. Although he was unenthusiastic at first (specifically for rehearsing), the more he performed, the more his passion for music grew. Two years later, when Douglas Parnham retired, Gerald Wirth took over as the Artistic Director, which solidified the foundation of Carey's career. That year he had his first international tour to Florida, where the choir spent several days at Disney World performing at Magic Music Days and then at the Florida International Boys Choir Festival. The next year he participated in the choir's month-long tour of Europe, performing in Italy, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
Following his tour in Europe, as his voice started to change, he took up the trumpet in his junior high band. High school provided him yet another opportunity to tour, when the school band traveled to California to play at Magic Music Days at Disneyland. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled in college as a trumpet major, but after a less than encouraging semester, he made the decision to switch back to singing.
During the first summer of his college years at North American Baptist College (NABC), Carey joined the Canadian Continentals on the Mission of Love tour, which went across Canada, into New York State, and then to Brazil.
Through his second year at NABC, Carey began to develop medical issues, and eventually, he had to drop out of school to recover. During his time recovering at home, he started writing his own music. However, it would be 10 years before he released his first album.
Instead of going back to NABC, Carey enrolled in the University of Lethbridge to obtain his Bachelor of Music, where he started working on more prominent roles.
Three busy seasons later (approximately 16 years later), Carey took a break from his musical career. He often said, "When music starts to feel like work, that's when I'll quit." He understood that chasing after gigs would burn him out soon, thus he was prompted to take a long break.
During his break, Carey took on a more stable job outside his music career. However, as he was not yet ready to go back to singing, he decided to join the Royal Canadian Navy for the Canadian Armed Forces.
