From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Carl Cattermole is an ex-prisoner, author and journalist who writes for The Guardian, openDemocracy, Vice and others.

HMP Survival Guide[edit]

After serving a year-long sentence[1] at Wormwood Scrubs, Wandsworth and Pentonville, he self-published the free HMP - A Survival Guide in 2011, a publication designed to assist expectant prisoners and their families, and educate the wider world about the realities of life in British prisons.

In 2015 an updated version was published by Ditto Press but remained free online. The new version includes illustrations by Private Eye/FT cartoonist Banx and backing from Will Self.[2]

Prison reform[edit]

Cattermole argues for a change in prison policy because of his experiences while behind bars. He says "the prison system makes the worst people in society worse".[3]

Controversy[edit]

In October 2011 the Daily Mirror reported that HMP - A Survival Guide taught “future jailbirds how to break prison rules” and had “sparked fury”, quoting Conservative Member of Parliament Priti Patel, who said the publication “makes a mockery of our criminal justice system and proves the government must reform our prisons and make them tough and unpleasant places.”[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

Thought leadership[edit]

Cattermole has written for a number of publications about prison-related issues, including conditions at Pentonville[13], prison education[14] and the smoking ban in prisons.[15]
